STEWARD'S PROGRAM
What is it?
The Dungeness Barn House Steward's Program was born from a profound dedication to the restoration of an old barn and the land it occupies, coupled with a vision for sustainability. Having proudly stewarded the Dungeness Barn House for over a decade at the age of 70, it has become evident that its longevity cannot rely solely on individual efforts. There’s a deep desire to perpetuate the enchanting essence of the property, which seized my heart decades ago.
Recognizing that sustainability hinges on diverse factors, it’s not only about the income from guests but also the invaluable contributions of friends, family, and dedicated workers who sustain this dream. While the Dungeness Barn House isn’t a non-profit organization per se, it operates more like a non-profit enterprise, driven by passion rather than profit margins.
It’s remarkable how the right people consistently find their way here, whether as guests, workers, or family. In recent years, recognizing the need for additional support during peak seasons, arrangements have been made to offer accommodation in exchange for work. This simple exchange has proved transformative, inspiring a commitment to extend such opportunities to others.
The property demands a diverse skill set, from hospitality to tending gardens, caring for chickens, maintaining ponds and waterfronts, orchestrating events, and perpetually embarking on new projects. It’s an environment that fosters continual learning, where flexibility and adaptability are paramount. Plans are subject to change at a moment’s notice, requiring a willingness to embrace uncertainty and pivot as needed.
In essence, the Dungeness Barn House is a profound teacher, imparting lessons in commitment, adaptability, and the joy of serving whatever the moment demands.
How to get started:
Candidates seeking Stewardship opportunities must be referred directly. Along with the recommendation, please include an email explaining why the recommended individual would be suitable for the position. Stewards live on the property and assist onsite for an average of 25 hours per week.
It’s important to note that there are only a limited number of opportunities available each season, and most interns typically stay for a duration of 1-2 months. Tasks may include flipping rooms, helping in the garden, going on supply runs, animal care, social media, and more; no two days are alike, and any Stewards must be able to work independently, take direction, chip in whenever the need arises, and have a passion for hospitality and sustainability. There is ample free time built into each day for Stewards, as long as tasks are completed with punctuality and professionalism.
When submitting a recommendation, kindly include the name, age, gender, and previous work experience of the person you are recommending. Your thoroughness is appreciated.
Please direct recommendations to Clare at dungenessbarnhouse@olympus.net.
